“Terra roxa” (purple soil – actually red) is a very fertile soil, characterized by millions of years of decomposition of volcanic lava from the biggest volcano eruption on earth (that caused the separation between Africa and South America in the Mesozoic era.).
This type of soil was very important for the development of its region. Entire cities depended on crops beautifully grown thanks to this rich soil.
The name “Terra Roxa” comes from the Italian immigrants that worked in farms in the region, they called it “terra rossa”(red soil) that mistranslated to Portuguese as “roxa” (purple) because they sound alike.
People that are born in these special places are denominated “Pé Vermelho” that means red foot .
